  • Microsoft have responded to the fixoutlook.org campaign which has had a viral spread through Twitter over the last couple of days. Microsoft are sticking with Word 2010 for rendering in Outlook 2010, which is a pain for those of us who offer HTML email campaigns to clients as it is missing a number of core features. Whether you agree with Microsoft or not though, there is a wider issue here. There's no de jure standard for composing email, just a few de facto standards. From Microsoft's business standing there is little point in embracing de facto standards, especailly when the de facto standards themselves are flawed. I wonder why we even use HTML email at all? My only reasoning is that its easier for web based mail clients to render, but HTML is such a complex markup, designed for rich, interactive websites. Why is email using it at all? And as email marketing grows in popularity, why are there no de jure standards yet, like those of W3C from the web?
  • This is something that worries me a lot. To me, Facebook is my private space, un-moderated by anyone but myself. Its me online just as me, there's no one from work allowed on my profile, and unless you're a very close friend you're going to be on lock down through fine grain permissions. Unless the kinks get sorted out soon my trust in Facebook (which I actually like a lot at present) will drop severely.
